The Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III, aged 75, has been diagnosed with cancer. This surprising revelation follows a recent hospital procedure related to a benign prostatic enlargement.

“During the recent hospital procedure for benign prostatic enlargement, a separate issue of concern was observed,” the palace said in a statement. Further diagnostic tests led to the identification of a form of cancer, the specific stage of which was not disclosed in the statement.

In a separate declaration, the palace clarified that King Charles does not have prostate cancer.

The news comes a week after King Charles and Kate were discharged from a private clinic in London. The King underwent a “corrective procedure” for prostatic enlargement, while Kate, 42, underwent an unspecified abdominal surgery on January 17.

The palace’s statement also informed that “His Majesty has begun a schedule of regular treatments and has been advised by doctors to postpone public duties.”

King Charles decided to share his diagnosis publicly to prevent speculation and, at the same time, “in the hope that it may help public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Charles expressed gratitude for the prompt intervention and specialized care of his medical team. Currently, no further details about his treatment or prognosis are available. A palace spokesperson confirmed that the king returned to London on Monday to begin outpatient treatment.
